Windows updates for WinXP

I’m fresh from fighting with a very annoying issue. Somehow, someway, Microsoft has done something to Windows updates for WinXP. I am installing Windows XP Pro – 32bit for the 3rd machine in a row, and I kept being redirected to an article about Windows updates not working due to the Automatic Updates options that were not chosen. This is not the case of course, but I did find the solution to it!

You will have to manually download the Windows Update Agent via this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104

Once its downloaded, run it from the command line prompt: WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /quiet

Afterwards, it will allow you to go to the Windows Update page correctly.  If you come across this issue, you now know the work around…and knowing is half the battle!
